It was built between 1966 and 1969 and was produced in two different type the first (0th unit) for the sud region as a suburban train and the second (500th unit) for the cold region, adapted with insulative measure for the motor and the interior.
After the failure of JNR any company make some modification to the car and livery but many of this Kiha was out of service.
This is the new livery for Hiroshima area.
