It was built in 1960 to replace steam locomotive in super express train, it is equiped with two engines,and is very diffused in all Japan. After 1980 iwas used only for local train. After the failure of JNR any company make some modification to the car and livery. The Kiha 58 was produced in 1822 units with his sister Kiha 28 tha differ only because has only an engine. The red livery is the old livery of Hiroshima area.
