Ciosbahn was created in 1912 by Paul Ilci’s project and the first line was the Wattwill-Cioppensburg, subsequently lengthened to reach Ruti.
In 1917 works were begun to build the line to St. Gallen, which ended in 1921.
The final line, the Cioppensburg-Nesslau line, was opened in 1937.

In 1957 Ciosbahn was acquired by SBB (Swiss Federal railways), yet the town of Cioppensburg owns 49% of its stocks.
At present, the Ciosbahn lines show a positive budget and are extensively used both for passenger and freight trains.
