This train was built in 70 units to cover "Nozomi" services on Tokaido and Sanyo lines. Actually these trains were used for "Hikary" and "Kodama" services on Tokaido and Sanyo lines.
Technically, they are notable for being the first Shinkansen sets to employ three-phase AC traction motors instead of direct current units.
